Estate Planning Attorney (Contract) — Virginia
An independent, attorney-owned firm in the Relevant Law network is seeking an estate planning attorney, on an independent-contractor (1099) basis, to serve individuals and families across Virginia. The practice covers wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance directives, and estate and trust administration. You work directly with clients through every stage of the planning relationship in a remote-first practice, with the firm's platform handling operations and administration.
Responsibilities:
- Design and draft wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, and advance directives
- Counsel clients on estate, gift, and incapacity planning strategies
- Guide executors and trustees through estate and trust administration
- Conduct client meetings and signings, in person or by video as appropriate under Virginia law
- Manage a personal caseload and deadlines independently in a distributed practice
Qualifications:
- Active admission to the Virginia State Bar and in good standing
- Professional liability (malpractice) insurance covering the engagement, or the ability to obtain coverage before beginning work
- Meaningful estate planning experience serving Virginia clients, including drafting wills and trusts
- Working knowledge of Virginia probate and trust administration procedure
- Warm, clear communication style with individuals and families
- Proficiency with legal research and drafting platforms, including AI-powered tools, with the judgment to verify every output
- Self-directed in a remote-first environment; able to manage multiple matters and deadlines independently
Compensation: $125–$200 per hour, commensurate with experience. This is an independent-contractor (1099) engagement in a remote-first, distributed practice.
